Phil recalls very early on a total obsession with his father’s reel-to-reel tape recorder and its ability to capture sound. Born the year the Beatles came to fame, he was driven as a child by pop and alternative scenes of the era.
In his early teens, recordings started with bouncing between two mono recorders, graduating to a 4-track, developing complex results by experimenting with various techniques. DJ-ing was also a thing, providing money and music contacts.A keen recorder player, as a young teenager he moved onto guitar, keyboards and bass and composed prolifically, also singing. There were some bands, but the lure of recording and production remained central.
Starting working life as a computer programmer in the eighties, he and a group of friends bought Horizon Studios, home of the Two Tone artists, in Coventry. Many extremely well-known artists recorded albums there including The Specials, Selecter, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, and Steel Pulse.
He left the studio in 1986 and went on to graduate in Law..
He met Jane in 1995, when she arrived at a local folk club with a Roland piano and asked him to carry it in for her. They were married a few months later, and have both been committed to a professional involvement with music ever since.
Moving to Wales, Phil and Jane have run their own studios for many years, recording and producing a wide variety of music.
In 2015, Phil and Jane decided to focus on their own music. This led to the release of seven singles by a band known as Henry's Machine.
Shortly after this, an album of Pop Funk music was released under the name, HookstickA short tour followed, and Hookstick continues to promote its unique music and style, after a brief sojourn in Spain, where Phil and Jane were lucky enough to meet up with Marty Prior, bassist extraordinaire.
Following this,
they turned to look at Progressive Rock styles, and the band, Fluance, was born, with its first album featuring Marty and some of the Hookstick crew - Jonny Welburn, Tom Stedman and Kes Collins. Phil and Jane also had an opportunity to work with Duncan Mackay midway through the first album, Lunacy, and he has added his special touch to many of the tracks leading on to becoming a full member or the band.
