Who is Mauritz Lotz?

Is he the best guitarist on the continent of Africa? Many would agree. Fact is that this extraordinary musician has more than 4000 recordings to his credit. He is a Grammy Award voting member, has two co-production Grammy nomination credits and a production-win to his name. This exceptional artist, producer, composer, arranger and musician is called Mauritz Lotz. His talent is recognized internationally, but he calls South Africa home. And in his home country, Mauritz Lotz is universally recognized as a legend and an icon.
Mauritz started playing guitar at the age of ten and launched his professional music career at the age of seventeen by doing gigs and recording sessions for various artists. He soon established himself as a respected musician and producer in his own right.
A plethora of international artists have vied to work with him over the past forty years. These artists include Phil Manzanera, Chris de Burgh, Leo Sayer, Shawn Phillips, N’faly Kayoute, Ice Cube, Michael League & Bill Laurence (Snarky Puppy), Dave Mathews, Lokua Kanza, Crash Test Dummies, Scott Wesley Brown and Dana Winner to name a few. He has opened on stage for the likes of The Rolling Stones, Sting, Eric Clapton and Roberta Flack.
Closer to home, very few acknowledged South African stars have not shared the stage and the studio with Mauritz Lotz. Luminaries such as Hugh Masekela, Lucky Dube, Mango Groove, PJ Powers, Miriam Makeba and Grammy winners Wouter Kellerman and the Soweto Gospel Choir come to mind. Mauritz Lotz has excelled at working with many artists across the rich cultural spectrum of the country. These include legends like Stimela, Johannes Kerkorrel, the Soweto String Quartet, Stef Bos, Laurika Rauch, Vusi Mahlasela and Karen Zoid.
The scope of this remarkable musician and producer ranges from album projects to radio and TV adverts, from symphonic work for large-scale orchestral compositions to movie soundtracks. The latter include the recently released Netflix blockbuster Amandla. Whether on stage or in the studio, Mauritz continues to play an active role in the music industry as an independent film composer, music producer, arranger and musician.
